Multitouch-Tisch
Since October 2010 we are proud owners of an Evoluce One (external link) . This multitouch table allows us to rapidly create and evaluate Windows7-touch applications. Of particular interest are the supported interaction patterns: pen input, marker recognition, (multi-) touch and a touchless mode.
In contrast to other multitouch-techniques (e.g. FTIR, DIR, capacitive displays, …), the Evoluce One recognizes shadows of fingers or hands on the LCD display and transform them into touch points. The optional touchless mode is based on the same technique. In total, three fixed cameras are used for capturing “touches” on the surface.
This multitouch-table is being used for research on new interaction patterns, input and visualization techniques. We are offering student projects and the opportunity to work at the table for a thesis.

Previously we built an experimental prototype of a multitouch table in 2009. This table is based on FTIR-technique and uses about 210 SMD soldered infrared LEDs. These LEDs are fixed around a glass plate covered with a transparent silicon rubber film. The table itself is built on an aluminum frame and wheels allow easy transportation. Inside the table we fixed a beamer, a camera with infrared filter and a mirror, reflecting the beamer’s projection up to the surface to a diffusing membrane. Additionally, inside the table we fixed a standard-pc for processing the webcam’s image stream and run the touch recognition.
technical data
- surface: 1,00 x 0,75 m²
- beamer resolution: 1024 x 768
- camera resolution: about 640 x 480 (~30 images/s)
- FTIR-technique
- ~210 infrared LEDs (SMD)
- PC: Intel Core 2 Quad (2,33 GHz), 4 GB DDR2-RAM
